In the heart of downtown Louisville, on a spring morning, the life of 48-year-old Nathaniel Hill was tragically cut short. On May 2, 2019, Hill was shot multiple times under an overpass in the 400 block of Jefferson Street, near the Wayside Christian Mission. He was rushed to University Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead just after 11:30 a.m.
The Louisville Metro Police Department's homicide unit immediately began an investigation into the fatal shooting.
While the search for the shooter continued, authorities made one arrest in connection with the case. Twenty-eight-year-old Dwayne Whidby was taken into custody approximately three hours after the shooting. However, Whidby was not charged with murder. Instead, he faced a charge of tampering with physical evidence. Investigators alleged that Whidby was captured on surveillance video removing items from the murder scene, which hindered their efforts to piece together the events that led to Hill's death.
Initially, there was a report that a suspect in the shooting had been apprehended. However, the following day, police clarified that a suspect was not in custody, leaving the question of who fired the fatal shots unanswered. The community was left to mourn the loss of Nathaniel 'Bam' Hill, a man remembered by many as someone who was always laughing and who was loved by everyone who knew him. His death left a void in the lives of his family, including his children, and his many friends.
