In the early morning hours of January 30, 2021, the life of 45-year-old James Dion Russell, a Black male from Louisville, Kentucky, was tragically cut short. His body was discovered inside a vehicle in the parking lot of a Thorntons gas station on Dixie Highway in the Shively area of Louisville. An autopsy would later confirm that Russell had died from gunshot wounds.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office officially identified him and ruled his death a homicide.
Investigators with the Shively Police Department believe the shooting that ended James Russell's life did not occur at the Thorntons where he was found. Evidence suggests that the fatal shots were fired in a parking lot located on South 7th Street, near Arcade Avenue. It is believed that after being shot, Russell, or someone with him, drove to the well-lit, public space of the gas station seeking help. By the time police arrived at the scene around 6 a.m., it was too late.
In the days and weeks that followed, the Shively Police Department appealed to the public for any information regarding the shooting death of James Russell. Authorities released details about the suspected location of the shooting in the hopes that witnesses might come forward with information that could lead to a breakthrough in the case. Despite their efforts, there have been no public announcements regarding any suspects or arrests in connection with the homicide.
