In the summer of 2017, the life of 39-year-old Charles Cavanaugh was cut short during a violent home invasion in Louisville, Kentucky. On the night of Friday, June 23, 2017, events unfolded that would leave two people dead, including Cavanaugh. The incident occurred in the Russell neighborhood of the city.
An attempted armed robbery at Cavanaugh's apartment on West Jefferson Street turned deadly. According to police reports, four individuals were involved in a plan to rob Cavanaugh.
Three of the suspects, armed with guns, broke into his residence. In an act of self-defense, Cavanaugh returned fire, striking two of the intruders.
One of the suspects, 20-year-old Milik Lewis, was fatally wounded at the scene. During the exchange of gunfire, Cavanaugh was also shot. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died during surgery.
Following the incident, law enforcement identified the other individuals allegedly involved in the deadly plot. Two women, Lyndia Yarnell and Shaleta Harris, were arrested and faced multiple charges, including complicity to murder and complicity to robbery. A fourth suspect, Marlin Carpenter, was also identified but was hospitalized with gunshot wounds sustained during the home invasion.
