In the summer of 2020, a young mother's life was tragically cut short in a violent encounter at a Lexington, Kentucky gas station. Angel Dawn Marcum, a 26-year-old female, died on July 28, 2020, leaving behind a devastated family and a community in shock. Born on February 15, 1994, Angel was a mother to two young sons, Jayden Marcum and Adrian James.
She was the daughter of Toleman David and Gina Lynn Bentley Marcum and a sister to Erica Marcum.
On that Tuesday afternoon, at approximately 2:45 p.m., events unfolded at the Thorntons gas station on the corner of North Broadway and West Loudon Avenue that would end two lives. Inside an SUV, an argument between Angel Marcum and 54-year-old Antoine James escalated with fatal consequences. James shot Marcum before turning the gun on himself in what the police would later rule a murder-suicide. A Lexington police officer was inside the gas station at the time and was alerted to the argument. The officer attempted to intervene and get James to put down his weapon, but it was too late.
Both Angel Marcum and Antoine James were transported to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The Fayette County coroner's office confirmed their identities and the nature of their deaths. In the aftermath, law enforcement officials stated that no other individuals were harmed during the incident. With the perpetrator deceased, the investigation into Angel Marcum's death was concluded, and no further suspects were sought. The case was closed, leaving her family and friends to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a young woman in the prime of her life.
