Amy Koegel, a 43-year-old White/Caucasian female, tragically died on May 20, 2016, in Lexington, Kentucky. Her life was cut short in a violent act that stemmed from a domestic dispute. Koegel, a mother and an active community member, was found with gunshot wounds in the backyard of her home on Pinkney Drive. The discovery was made by police officers who were conducting a welfare check after her family reported her missing, having not seen her since the evening of May 18th.
The
investigation into her death quickly led to a suspect, her 45-year-old boyfriend, William R. Pomeroy, with whom she lived. Pomeroy turned himself in to the police on the same day Koegel's body was found and was subsequently charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence. During a six-hour interrogation, Pomeroy confessed to shooting Koegel multiple times. The motive for the killing was a heated argument over a $3,500 inheritance Pomeroy had received. He had wanted to use the money to buy cocaine.
According to his confession, the argument escalated on the back porch of their home. Pomeroy claimed that Koegel first pulled a nickel-plated. 357-caliber handgun on him, which he then took from her and used to shoot her. After she fell, he placed a pillow under her head and shot her several more times. The charge of tampering with physical evidence was added because he disposed of the gun after the murder. In February 2018, just days before his trial was set to begin, William Raleigh Pomeroy pleaded guilty to the murder of Amy Koegel and to evidence tampering. He was sentenced in March 2018 to a total of 21 years in prison: 20 years for murder and one year for tampering with evidence, to be served consecutively.
