In the early morning hours of December 10, 2022, the life of 19-year-old Elaina Quinn Mammen was tragically cut short in Lexington, Kentucky. Just before 6 a.m., Lexington Police were dispatched to the 3400 block of Colonnade Drive after reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered Mammen inside a vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident marked the 43rd homicide in Lexington for the year 2022. At the time of the shooting, there was another passenger in the vehicle with Mammen who was fortunately not injured.
The investigation into the young woman's death led to the identification of two suspects, who were brothers. A 15-year-old was the first to be taken into custody and charged with murder, wanton endangerment, and firearm-related offenses. Shortly after, his older brother, 22-year-old Hubert Riley, was also arrested and faced similar charges, including murder, wanton endangerment, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. According to court records, both brothers had fired into the vehicle that Mammen was driving. The gunfire was not isolated to her vehicle; two other vehicles and three residences with people inside were also struck during the incident.
In April 2025, the legal proceedings came to a resolution when both brothers pleaded guilty to their roles in Elaina Mammen's death. Hubert Riley pleaded guilty to murder, among other charges, and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. His younger brother, Alexander Riley, who was 18 at the time of the plea, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter and received a 17-year sentence. The conclusion of the court case brought a measure of justice for a life taken too soon, a life remembered by her family for a contagious smile and laughter that could light up any room.
