In the summer of 2014, a young woman's life was tragically cut short in Lexington, Kentucky. Eighteen-year-old Kieara Nicole Green, a recent high school graduate with dreams of independence, was fatally wounded in a shooting that also injured three other women. The incident occurred on the night of June 30, 2014, at a residence on Scottsdale Circle.
Kieara, who had recently moved from Nicholasville to Lexington and was working at a McDonald's, was struck by gunfire and succumbed to her injuries two days later, on July 2, 2014.
The investigation into the shooting proved to be challenging for law enforcement due to conflicting witness accounts. For a time, the case remained one of several unsolved homicides in the city. Friends and family remembered Kieara as a sweet and quiet young woman who was excited about starting her adult life. Her sudden and violent death left her community in shock and mourning. Her mother, Dinah Walker, faced the unimaginable task of taking her daughter off life support.
Years later, a break in the case brought a measure of legal closure to Kieara's family. In 2016, Allen Charles William Burgess was indicted for murder in connection with the shooting. Investigators linked him to the crime through DNA evidence found on a baseball cap left at the scene and ballistics evidence connecting a handgun found in his possession to the bullet that killed Kieara. It was believed that the shooting stemmed from an ongoing feud Burgess had with a man who was present at the house that night.
In July 2018, just days after the fourth anniversary of Kieara's death, Burgess, then 24, entered an Alford plea to a lesser charge of criminal facilitation to murder. This type of plea meant he did not admit guilt but acknowledged that prosecutors had enough evidence for a conviction. The plea agreement, which included the dismissal of three assault charges, was offered because key witnesses had become uncooperative. The recommended sentence was five years in prison. During the court hearing, Kieara's mother delivered a powerful victim impact statement, expressing her forgiveness towards Burgess while also describing the profound and lasting pain his actions had caused her family.
