In the late evening of August 15, 2020, the life of 15-year-old Corban Asher Henry, a White male, was tragically cut short in Owensboro, Kentucky. He was riding as a passenger on a moped with a friend in the 1500 block of West 5th Street when he was struck by a single gunshot. First responders found him deceased at the scene, the moped lying nearby.
The sudden violence of his death sent ripples of shock and grief through the community.
The investigation into Corban's death continued for nearly eight months, a period marked by his family and friends' public calls for justice. On May 4, 2021, the Owensboro Police Department announced the arrest of a 17-year-old male, Jaikorian Johnson, in connection with the shooting. The arrest came after an extensive investigation that included forensic analysis by the Kentucky State Police Crime Lab and numerous tips from the community. Johnson was initially charged as a juvenile with multiple offenses, including murder and attempted murder.
Given the severity of the charges, Johnson was later transferred to the adult court system to face trial. During the legal proceedings, it was revealed that Johnson had fired several shots from a 9mm handgun he had acquired just days before the incident. While he was ultimately found not guilty of murder, the jury convicted Jaikorian Johnson of second-degree manslaughter, fourth-degree assault, and wanton endangerment. He was sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison, which was capped at 20 years under Kentucky law.
