In the quiet town of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, the life of a 70-year-old Black man named Calvin Taylor was brought to a violent and tragic end. On the morning of October 13, 2020, police responded to a call of shots fired on North Kentucky Avenue. Inside a home, they made a grim discovery. Calvin 'Cue' Taylor was found deceased, his mouth and arm bound with duct tape.
An autopsy would later reveal he had been shot three times, twice in the abdomen and once in the back of the head.
The investigation into Taylor's death painted a dark picture of robbery and betrayal. Authorities alleged that a mother and son, 47-year-old Larayna Manning and 24-year-old Anthony Manning, were responsible for the heinous crime. Investigators believed the pair had gone to Taylor's residence, where a physical assault and robbery ensued. It was during this confrontation that Larayna Manning was accused of fatally shooting Taylor. Her son, Anthony, was accused of being the getaway driver, transporting his mother to and from the scene of the crime.
The wheels of justice began to turn with the swift arrest of Larayna Manning in Hopkinsville. Her son, however, had fled the state and was later captured by U.S. Marshals in Abilene, Texas. Both were charged in connection with the robbery and murder of Calvin Taylor. In the end, the legal proceedings would see the mother and son take different paths. Anthony Manning entered an Alford plea to facilitation charges for both the murder and robbery, a plea in which he did not admit guilt but acknowledged the strength of the evidence against him. He received a five-year prison sentence in November 2022 and would go on to testify during his mother's trial.
Larayna Manning's case went before a jury in a four-day trial that culminated in a guilty verdict for wanton murder and complicity to first-degree robbery in January 2023. The jury recommended she spend the rest of her life in prison for the murder, with an additional 20 years for the robbery. Her official sentencing was scheduled for March 22, 2023. The case, which brought to light a senseless act of violence, concluded with a life sentence for the woman who pulled the trigger, forever altering the lives of all involved.
