In the winter of 2021, a life was tragically cut short in Louisville, Kentucky. Stepfon 'Wooda' Bernard Monroe, a 33-year-old male, was killed on February 5th in his home located in the Russell neighborhood. Known for his ever-present smile and deep love for his family, Monroe's death left a void in the lives of those who knew him. He was a man looking forward to a new beginning, with a job at GE set to start in just a few days.
He was a devoted fan of both the University of Louisville and the Lakers, and his friendships, some stretching back to his childhood in the Southwick area, were a testament to his loyalty.
The events that led to his untimely death began with a heated argument over the phone. Kenyatta James, 43, was in a dispute with Monroe concerning James's daughter. This verbal altercation escalated dramatically when James appeared at Monroe's residence on West Madison Street, near South 23rd Street. There, the argument turned violent as James produced a firearm and shot Monroe multiple times. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found Monroe, who was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting continued for several months. Law enforcement officials were able to connect James to the crime, leading to the issuance of an arrest warrant. In April 2021, officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department apprehended Kenyatta James at his home on Rockford Lane. He was subsequently charged with murder for the death of Stepfon Monroe. The legal process culminated in James being convicted for the murder and sentenced to 40 years in prison in October 2024.
