In the early hours of a spring morning in Louisville, Kentucky, the life of 18-year-old Michael Bass, Jr. was tragically cut short. A Black male, Michael was a promising athlete who had a passion for football and basketball, having played for several local youth leagues and high schools, including Valley High School and Waggener High School. Those who knew him described him as a big guy with an even bigger heart, a tough exterior guarding a heart of gold.
He was a beloved son, brother, and friend, who enjoyed spending his time playing video games and listening to music.
On what began as a quiet night on April 3, 2021, a call was made to his mother, Maranesha Williams-Bass, alerting her that something was wrong at her home on West Kentucky Street. The front door was wide open. Inside, her son had been shot. There were signs of a struggle, with holes in the walls suggesting a violent confrontation. Michael was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound at 12:38 a.m. His mother believes he may have known his attacker, possibly letting them into the house, only to be betrayed and shot when his back was turned.
The pain of Michael's death was compounded by the family's history of profound loss. At the young age of 13, Michael had to step up and become the man of the house after a string of devastating events. In 2016, he lost his older brother to a heart attack. Just weeks later, his father, Michael Bass, Sr., was a victim of a triple homicide. This forced Michael to grow up quickly, shouldering responsibilities far beyond his years. His football coach, Raesean Bruce, became a mentor to him during these difficult times, offering support and guidance.
As of now, Michael's murder remains unsolved. The Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit is handling the investigation, but no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made. His mother has made heartfelt pleas to the community for anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward. She is left to visit a cemetery that holds her husband and two sons, searching for answers and justice for Michael, a young man whose future was stolen from him in his own home.
