In the Shawnee neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, 74-year-old Herbert Daniels, a Black male, was a cherished figure, known affectionately as 'Mr. Herb.'. His life was tragically cut short on the evening of Thursday, January 21, 2021, when a shootout erupted between two groups in the 600 block of South 41st Street, near River Park Drive.
Just before 9 p.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the night. Inside his home, Mr. Daniels was drawn to his front door out of concern for the commotion.
As he peered outside to see what was happening, a stray bullet from the crossfire struck him. He was an innocent bystander, caught in a senseless act of violence that had nothing to do with him. Neighbors described hearing the gunshots, a sound they said was unfortunately common in the area.
When officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department arrived at the scene, they found the front door of Mr. Daniels' home open and the glass shattered. They immediately rendered aid to him, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. He was alone in the house at the time of the shooting.
