In the early evening of May 8, 2021, in Lexington, Kentucky, 17-year-old Marquevion Leach was fatally shot in an incident that also left two other men wounded. The male teenager was a student at the Audrey Grevious Center, a Fayette County Public School. The shooting occurred just after 6 p.m. in the 700 block of Florence Avenue, where police responded to multiple calls reporting shots fired.
Upon their arrival, officers found several individuals had been struck by gunfire.
Marquevion Leach was transported to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The two other victims, a 27-year-old man and a 67-year-old man, sustained serious and non-life-threatening injuries, respectively. Investigators at the time stated that they believed the individuals had been specifically targeted, though a motive was not immediately clear. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, no suspects were taken into custody.
A vigil held for Marquevion Leach at Northeastern Park two days after his death was tragically interrupted by more gunfire. An unidentified man was shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the memorial. Law enforcement officials did not immediately know if the shooting at the vigil was connected to the homicide.
