In the afternoon of June 10, 2021, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of the Forrest Hills neighborhood in Paducah, Kentucky, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Thomas Willett, a 28-year-old male resident of Paducah, was shot near the intersection of Elmdale Drive and Jameswood Drive at approximately 2:58 p.m. Emergency services rushed him to Mercy Health-Lourdes Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 4:52 p.m.
The Paducah Police
Department swiftly launched an investigation into the shooting, which led to the identification of two suspects. In the days following Willett's death, authorities arrested 25-year-old Justin C. Wells, charging him with complicity to murder and tampering with physical evidence. Another suspect, 20-year-old Khalil Griffin, was also identified, and a search for him was initiated. The investigation continued to unfold over the subsequent months, as the community mourned the loss of a man remembered as a loving father and a caring friend.
By October 2023, a significant development occurred in the legal proceedings. Khalil Griffin, then 23, pleaded guilty to the shooting of Thomas Willett. As part of a plea agreement, the prosecution recommended a sentence of twenty-one years and six months, with the requirement that he serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole. The case against Justin Wells was scheduled to be heard in November 2023. Those who knew Thomas Willett recalled him as a 2011 graduate of Paducah Tilghman High School and a self-employed individual in internet sales. He was a member of Trinity New Hope Christian Church in Mayfield and a fan of the New York Knicks and Cincinnati Bengals.
