On a Sunday evening in Paducah, Kentucky, the life of Ben Hall Jr., a 44-year-old White man, was cut short by violence. Police responded to a reported shooting around 5:41 p.m. on December 22, 2024, at the intersection of North 8th and Campbell Streets. Officers arrived to find Hall in the street with two gunshot wounds to his upper torso. They administered first aid until paramedics arrived and transported him to an area hospital.
Hall was later transferred to an out-of-state hospital for treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Ben Hall Jr. died from his injuries the following night, on Monday, December 23. His death prompted the Paducah Police Department to reclassify its investigation from assault to homicide.
Detectives identified 21-year-old Dorian M. Lewis as the shooter. Lewis was at the scene when officers first arrived and was arrested. He was taken to the McCracken County Jail and initially charged with first-degree assault. Following Hall’s death, the charge against Lewis was amended to murder.
The case took a significant turn at a preliminary hearing in January 2025. A judge dismissed the murder charge against Dorian Lewis after finding no probable cause. During the hearing, a Paducah Police detective testified that Lewis had acted to defend a woman's life. The detective stated that the woman reported Hall had assaulted her immediately before the shooting occurred and that Lewis had intervened to protect her. Following the dismissal, Lewis was released from jail.
