In the autumn of 1998, a well-known and beloved figure in the Paducah, Kentucky community, Eugene 'Happy' Thomas, became the victim of a violent act that would ultimately claim his life months later. An African-American male, Thomas was 74 years old and a familiar face to many as the proprietor of Happy's Chili Parlor, a local eatery situated on North 12th Street near his residence.
