In the summer of 2021, the life of 48-year-old Devon Devaughn Kendrick, a Black male from Hopkinsville, Kentucky, was tragically cut short. On the night of July 28th, police responded to a call of shots fired on Sharpe Street. Upon arrival, they discovered Kendrick suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Jennie Stuart Medical Center and later airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
Despite undergoing emergency surgery, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Kendrick's death quickly led to an arrest. The following day, authorities took 36-year-old Mory Burse into custody, charging him with murder and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. In September 2021, a Christian County Grand Jury indicted Burse on these charges. He pleaded not guilty, and the legal process began to unfold, with a trial date eventually set for March 2022.
However, the case took a significant turn as the proceedings continued. After further investigation and the emergence of an alternative suspect, Cortez Hairston Jr., the prosecution's case against Burse weakened. Conflicting witness testimonies further complicated the matter. In April 2024, the charges against Mory Burse were dismissed without prejudice, meaning he could be charged again if new evidence surfaces. The Hopkinsville Police Department's investigation into the death of Devon Devaughn Kendrick remains ongoing.
