In the early morning hours of August 7, 2021, the quiet of a Hopkinsville, Kentucky neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Inside a home on Peach Street, 21-year-old George Gomez and 25-year-old Kierra Wallace were fatally shot. A neighbor, alerted by the series of shots before 8:00 a.m., discovered an open door at the residence and saw a person leaving in a vehicle.
This grim discovery prompted a call to 9-1-1 and launched a double homicide investigation.
The investigation quickly led authorities to identify a person of interest, Anthony Gaines. He was located and apprehended in Montgomery County, Tennessee, by the Clarksville Police Department. Initially, Gaines was sought on outstanding warrants for wanton endangerment, theft, and failure to appear in court. However, his connection to the double homicide soon became the focus of the investigation.
Anthony Gaines was subsequently charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Gomez and Wallace. The charges against him escalated to include first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, tampering with physical evidence, and four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment. Gaines, who was 32 years old at the time of his indictment, entered a plea of not guilty.
The legal proceedings have been marked by delays, including disputes over the sharing of evidence between the prosecution and the defense. A plea deal was eventually offered to Gaines, which, after some negotiation, he ultimately rejected. With the rejection of the plea agreement, the prosecution has indicated that they will proceed to trial, with the death penalty remaining a possibility. A trial date has been set for July 14, 2025.
