In the early morning hours of August 14, 2021, 27-year-old Kyle Michael Elzy, a White/Caucasian male, was at the Triple Crown Car Wash in the Lyndon neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. He had recently scratched his new car and, wanting to fix it himself, had gone to the car wash to clean the surface before painting it. It was a decision that would tragically prove to be his last. As he stood near the coin machine, he was approached and shot multiple times.
First responders found him with fatal gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene in the 9900 block of La Grange Road.
Initially, the Louisville Metro Police Department had no suspects and appealed to the public for information. Their investigation took a crucial turn when they released surveillance video of a man they believed to be involved in the shooting. Tips from the public, prompted by the video, helped police identify the suspect as Kevin Thompson. According to court documents, Thompson and Elzy had no prior relationship. Thompson was subsequently arrested and charged with murder and robbery.
The investigation further revealed the involvement of a second individual, Dakaisha West. It was determined that West had driven Thompson to the car wash. After Thompson shot and robbed Elzy, West drove him away from the scene and later helped him dispose of the clothes he was wearing. The two then fled the state. Eventually, both Thompson and West were apprehended and faced legal proceedings for their roles in the death of Kyle Elzy.
Both Kevin Thompson and Dakaisha West pleaded guilty to charges related to the crime. Thompson pleaded guilty to murder and first-degree robbery and was sentenced to 36 years in prison. West, identified as an accomplice, pleaded guilty to criminal facilitation to murder, criminal facilitation to robbery, and tampering with physical evidence, receiving a sentence of five years in prison. The resolution of the case brought a measure of justice to the family of Kyle Elzy, who was remembered by his mother as a kind-hearted person who would do anything for anyone.
