In the late summer of 2021, a heartbreaking tragedy struck the city of Louisville, Kentucky, forever altering the lives of a local family. On August 15, 2021, nine-year-old Kaylee Jessica Doris Lee, a bright-eyed fourth-grade student at Wilkerson Elementary, was killed. The young girl, who was known for her love of watching YouTube and spending cherished moments with her family, was a victim of a violent home invasion in her family's residence on Lyons Avenue in the southwest part of the
city.
On that fateful day, Kaylee and her father, Vernon Lee Jr., were both fatally shot. The incident, which appeared to be a home invasion, left a void in the community and in the hearts of those who knew the vibrant young girl. Investigators noted that a safe in the home was found empty, suggesting robbery as a motive for the brutal crime.
The investigation into the double homicide continued for months, with the Louisville Metro Police Department diligently following leads. Their efforts, aided by crucial community tips and phone records, eventually led to a breakthrough in the case. More than six months after the killings, two suspects were identified and apprehended. Antonio Sanderson and Antonio Brown were arrested and subsequently indicted by a Jefferson County Grand Jury.
The two men faced a litany of serious charges, including murder, robbery, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, and being a persistent felony offender. Brown also faced an additional charge for failure to comply with sex offender registration. Following their arrests, both men pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.
