In the early evening of May 29, 2023, a tragedy unfolded in the parking lot of a CVS at the intersection of Preston and East Broadway in Louisville, Kentucky. Amanda S. Miller, a 37-year-old mother of three, was fatally shot around 7:30 p.m. The incident cut short the life of a woman remembered by her family as a loving mother to her children, Amihya Miller, DeMichael Harrison, and Akira Harrison.
The investigation into Amanda's death led authorities to 33-year-old Maurice Byars.
According to Amanda's mother, her daughter had been attempting to end a brief, three-week dating relationship with Byars. On the day of the shooting, Amanda had left her home, possibly to return some of Byars' belongings. Just over an hour later, she was found with multiple gunshot wounds.
Following a news conference and an anonymous tip, the Louisville Metro Police Department apprehended Maurice Byars on January 19, 2024, in the 1200 block of South Preston Street. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery. Byars pleaded not guilty to the charges, and his bond was set at $175,000 cash, with the condition of no contact with Miller's family.
