Jermaine JayQuan Sprewer, a 25-year-old male, vanished from his home on Crockett Drive in southwest Louisville on September 7, 2021. The harrowing ordeal for his family began shortly after his disappearance when they started receiving FaceTime calls from his captors. In these disturbing calls, they saw Jermaine bound with guns pointed at him as the assailants demanded a large sum of money for his safe return.
The search for Jermaine ended in tragedy four days later, on September 11, when
his body was discovered at the boat ramp in Shawnee Park. The discovery confirmed the family's worst fears and launched a homicide investigation by the Louisville Metro Police Department, who had already suspected a kidnapping for ransom.
In January 2022, a significant breakthrough in the case came when Louisville Metro Police, in collaboration with federal partners, arrested 31-year-old Roderick Bush and 28-year-old Dejuan Simonton. Both men were charged with complicity to murder and complicity to kidnapping in connection with Sprewer's death. During the execution of search warrants related to the case, an exchange of gunfire occurred at one of the locations, highlighting the dangerous nature of the criminal enterprise. Later, in April 2022, a Jefferson County grand jury indicted a third suspect, Joseph Hale, on charges of murder and kidnapping in the same case.
