In the early morning hours of Halloween 2021, a night that should have been filled with festive celebration, turned into a scene of tragedy in Louisville, Kentucky. Darius Anderson, a 22-year-old Black male, was working as a security guard at the Unity Palace Event Center on Shepherdsville Road. Alongside him was his cousin, 22-year-old LaTroy Hornbeak.
The two were inseparable in life, born just six months apart, and on this night, they were working side-by-side.
Inside the event center, a dispute broke out at a private party. As Anderson and Hornbeak intervened to de-escalate the situation, the altercation spilled out into the parking lot. It was there, in the chaos of the moment, that gunfire erupted. Both Anderson and Hornbeak were struck by bullets. Emergency services arrived to a chaotic scene, and the two cousins were rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital. Tragically, neither man survived their injuries. Two other individuals were also shot during the incident and transported themselves to the hospital.
In the days that followed, family members remembered Darius and LaTroy as hardworking young men who were simply doing their jobs. Their deaths left a profound void in the lives of their loved ones. Despite the ongoing investigation by the Louisville Metro Police Department and pleas from the family for those with information to come forward, no arrests have been made in connection with the murders of Darius Anderson and LaTroy Hornbeak. The case remains unsolved, and police have not publicly identified any suspects.
