In the early morning hours of November 28, 2021, a night that began with entertainment at the Princess Theater in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, tragically ended for 21-year-old Aniya Collins. She was fatally struck by a stray bullet while inside her car, attempting to leave an area where a dispute had escalated into gunfire. Aniya was an unintended victim, caught in the crossfire of a violent exchange that erupted following a party.
When police responded to reports of a large fight and shots fired just before 2 a.m., they discovered Aniya deceased in her vehicle from a gunshot wound to the chest.
The investigation into the shooting identified three men as being involved in the altercation: Deovion Day, Jaquavian Spencer, and Zamarius Humphries. According to police, the incident began when Humphries and Spencer got into an argument and began shooting at each other. During this exchange, Deovion Day also began firing a weapon. It was during this chaotic shootout that Aniya Collins was killed, and another woman, Gteria Acree, was shot in the leg. Zamarius Humphries was also found at the scene with a gunshot wound to the neck.
Following the investigation, Deovion Day was arrested and charged with the murder of Aniya Collins. However, at the conclusion of his trial, a jury found him not guilty of murder, as well as not guilty of manslaughter and assault. Jaquavian Spencer and Zamarius Humphries faced different charges related to the shooting incident. Both men ultimately pleaded guilty to charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and first-degree wanton endangerment. They were each sentenced to seven years in prison for their roles in the events that led to the tragic death of Aniya Collins.
