In the early morning hours of August 14, 2020, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, a violent encounter cut short the life of 39-year-old Tiffany Hinton Gray. The incident, which unfolded around 2:00 a.m. on East 1st Street, also resulted in serious injuries to a 17-year-old female, Kanina Willingham. When police arrived at the scene following reports of shots fired, they discovered Gray unresponsive in the roadway with at least one gunshot wound.
She was transported by ambulance to Jennie Stuart Medical Center, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Willingham had been taken to the hospital in a private vehicle before law enforcement's arrival and was later flown to a Nashville hospital for treatment of her extensive injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, 20-year-old Tyresse Hollowell. According to police reports and testimony, the fatal shooting stemmed from an argument between Hollowell and Gray's juvenile son. Video evidence from the scene reportedly showed Gray stepping in between her son and Hollowell during the confrontation. It was during this altercation that Hollowell allegedly obtained a gun from another juvenile and opened fire, striking Gray twice. A witness at the scene identified Hollowell as the shooter. Investigators recovered approximately 40 shell casings from the area, attesting to the chaotic nature of the event. A juvenile was also charged in connection with the incident for possession of a handgun by a minor.
Following the shooting, a manhunt for Tyresse Hollowell ensued, with police considering him armed and dangerous. On August 16, 2020, Hollowell turned himself in to the Hopkinsville Police Department. He was subsequently charged with murder for the death of Tiffany Hinton Gray and assault for the injuries sustained by Kanina Willingham. In September 2020, a Christian County Grand Jury indicted Hollowell on these charges. Later, in July 2021, he was also indicted for engaging in organized crime.
The legal proceedings culminated in a plea deal in September 2021. Tyresse Hollowell, then 21, pleaded guilty to complicity to reckless homicide, first-degree wanton endangerment, and attempting to engage in organized crime. As a result of the plea agreement, he was sentenced to five years in prison. At the time of his sentencing, he had already served enough time to be eligible for parole.
