In the early morning hours of February 2, 2022, the life of 36-year-old Gregory Burse was tragically cut short inside a residence on Richard Street in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Police officers responded to a call at approximately 12:30 a.m. and discovered Burse unresponsive in the kitchen, having sustained a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Emergency medical personnel transported him to Jennie Stuart Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation quickly led authorities
to identify 43-year-old Daron “Peter” Bell as a person of interest. After being interviewed by detectives, Bell reportedly admitted to shooting Burse. The motive for the fatal shooting was an alleged argument over rent money. Bell was subsequently arrested and charged with murder.
During a preliminary hearing, a detective testified that Bell had told a friend to go 'check on' Burse because he had shot him earlier in the day. Although guns were found at the residence, they did not match the bullets that killed Burse. The case was then sent to a grand jury for consideration.
In a resolution to the case, Daron Bell later entered an Alford plea to the amended charges of first-degree manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. An Alford plea allows a defendant to maintain their innocence while acknowledging that the prosecution has enough evidence to likely secure a conviction. In January 2023, a judge accepted the plea and sentenced Bell to 20 years in prison.
