On a tragic day in the Newburg neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, Angelica Marie James, a 38-year-old Black / African American mother, lost her life in a violent encounter. On February 27, 2022, she was fatally shot by Christopher Lee Gordon, the father of her two-year-old child. The brutal attack also left her 10-year-old son injured with a gunshot wound to his hand, a survivor of the horrific event that unfolded before him.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, a frantic
search ensued for the two-year-old son of James and Gordon, who was abducted from the scene by his father. An Amber Alert was quickly issued, casting a wide net in the desperate search for the missing toddler. Hours later, the young boy was found safe, bringing a small measure of relief to a situation steeped in tragedy. Gordon, however, managed to evade capture and went on the run, sparking a manhunt that would last for several days.
The search for Christopher Lee Gordon eventually came to an end with his apprehension. He was subsequently charged with a litany of felonies stemming from the events of that fatal day. Court proceedings revealed a history of domestic violence, painting a grim picture of the circumstances that led to the death of Angelica James. After being tried, Gordon was found guilty of murder, assault, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. The jury, also finding him to be a persistent felony offender, recommended a life sentence for his crimes. His official sentencing was scheduled for August 5, 2024. The community, meanwhile, mourned the loss of a beloved mother, gathering at the scene of the shooting to create a memorial of candles and balloons in her honor.
