In the early morning hours of March 3, 2022, the life of 54-year-old Walter David Bell Jr. came to a tragic end in a pizza shop parking lot in East Frankfort, Kentucky. A paramedic first discovered him unresponsive next to his black Jeep, which was parked unevenly in a handicapped spot. Bell had sustained a single gunshot wound to the left side of his chest.
Despite the efforts of first responders and hospital staff who tried to revive him for thirty minutes at Frankfort Regional Medical Center, he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into his death quickly focused on a family member. Authorities learned that Bell and his son, Camden Bell, had been involved in a heated argument through text messages the day before the shooting. In the exchange, Camden reportedly called his father a liar. On the morning of his death, Walter Bell had allegedly sent a text to his son that read, “on my way lets do it.” This message was sent shortly before he was found. His wife, Jo Ann Bell, informed authorities that their son had dropped her off at work that morning.
The investigation led to the arrest of Camden Bell, then 35, who was charged with the murder of his father. The case was classified as domestic violence. In addition to the murder charge, he also faced charges for being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. After a psychiatric evaluation determined he was competent to stand trial, the legal proceedings moved forward.
Ultimately, Camden Bell pleaded guilty to amended charges of first-degree manslaughter and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. According to his plea agreement, he admitted to shooting his father while under the influence of extreme emotional disturbance. In exchange for his guilty plea, other charges were dismissed. He was sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison for his role in the death of his father, Walter David Bell.
