In the early morning hours of August 13, 2022, a gathering in the small community of Olmstead, Kentucky, turned tragic, ending the life of 20-year-old Joshua D. Burks. A male soldier in the U.S. Army, Burks was stationed at the nearby Fort Campbell, serving with the 101st Airborne Division. Originally from Visalia, California, he was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment and had earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal,
and the Army Service Ribbon.
Just before 3:30 a.m., law enforcement responded to a call on Kenny Stratton Road. Upon their arrival, they discovered that Burks had been fatally shot. The individual responsible for the shooting had fled the scene before authorities arrived, leaving a lingering mystery in the quiet, rural area. The Logan County Sheriff's Office secured the scene and promptly requested that the Kentucky State Police take the lead in the investigation into the young soldier's death.
Kentucky State Police detectives began a homicide investigation, seeking to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed at the Medical Examiner's Office in Louisville to formally determine the cause of death. As the investigation commenced, authorities urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward.
