In the late evening hours of September 11, 2022, a sense of unease settled over a section of Louisville, Kentucky. It was near the Watterson Expressway on South 3rd Street, a place of constant transit, that a grim discovery was made. Officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department were dispatched to the area under the I-264 overpass around 11 p.m. following reports of a shooting. There, they found the body of Gage Edward Lankford, a 31-year-old White male.
The Jefferson County Coroner's office would later confirm that he had died from a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gage, a resident of Louisville, was born on July 12, 1991. Known to be close with his family, his sudden and violent death sent ripples of grief through his community. He was a father, son, and brother whose life was cut tragically short, leaving behind his children, Kenzy Hill and Gavin Lankford. The unexpected loss left a profound void for those who knew and loved him, a community now left to mourn and wonder about the circumstances that led to this tragedy.
In the wake of the shooting, the LMPD's Homicide Unit opened an investigation into Gage Lankford's death. Despite their efforts to piece together the events of that night, the case has remained a painful puzzle. To date, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide.
