In the city of Louisville, Kentucky, a 24-year-old male named Jimy Mejias was tragically killed on the evening of December 5, 2022. The events unfolded in the parking lot of the Arthur Street Hotel in Old Louisville, where Mejias was with 28-year-old Kenneth Sauer Jr. when they were both shot. The Louisville Metro Police Department responded to the scene around 7:15 p.m. to find both men with gunshot wounds. While Sauer was pronounced dead at the scene, Mejias was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Investigators determined that neither Mejias nor Sauer were registered guests at the hotel. The motive behind the violent encounter appeared to be robbery, as surveillance footage captured suspects moving Sauer's body to search through his vehicle. The families of both victims were left devastated, mourning the loss of their loved ones, including children who were now left without their fathers. They publicly pleaded for justice and for anyone with information to come forward to aid the investigation.
For months, the case remained under active investigation, leaving the families in a state of uncertainty. A significant breakthrough occurred in May 2023, when the Louisville Metro Police Department announced the arrest of 31-year-old Kelen Slaughter in connection with the double homicide. Slaughter was subsequently charged with murder, complicity, robbery, and three counts of trafficking a controlled substance. While the arrest brought a measure of relief to the grieving families, authorities have indicated that the investigation continues.
