On December 15, 1989, Patrolman Michael Alan Hogan, aged 43, was tragically killed in Hutchinson, Minnesota. Hogan, a dedicated officer with 15 years of service in the Hutchinson Police Department, responded to a shoplifting call at a local JC Penney store. The suspect, who had been detained by store security and held in the loss prevention office, managed to conceal a handgun. As Patrolman Hogan was running the suspect's name, the suspect shot him in the head, resulting in his immediate death.
