On January 7, 2018, DeSean Daggs, a 23-year-old man from Minneapolis, MN, was tragically shot and killed in the Dinkytown neighborhood. The incident occurred around 2:13 a.m. on the 500 block of 12th Avenue Southeast. When police arrived at the scene, they found Daggs lying on the sidewalk with a fatal gunshot wound to his chest.
The investigation revealed that Daggs had been attending a party at a residence in the area.
Witnesses reported that Anthony Dale Klitzke, who was 17 years old at the time, pointed a handgun at a group of people on the back porch and fired several shots. Klitzke then fled the scene. One witness, identified as C.S., saw Klitzke get into an argument with Daggs before the shooting. Klitzke also fired at C.S., hitting him in the right thigh.
Further investigation uncovered that the motive behind the shooting was linked to a prior incident between Daggs and another individual, Clinton Angwenyi Omuya, who was 25 years old. About a year before the shooting, Daggs had attempted to rob Omuya, during which Omuya was shot. Following this incident, Omuya had reportedly told several people that he intended to kill Daggs.
On the night of the shooting, Omuya contacted the host of the party to confirm if Daggs was present. Surveillance footage showed Omuya's Mercedes arriving at the residence around 2:06 a.m., with a male passenger exiting the vehicle and approaching the house. The same individual was seen fleeing the scene at 2:11 a.m. and getting back into Omuya's car, which then sped away.
Both suspects were subsequently charged in connection with the murder. Anthony Klitzke was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree assault, while Clinton Omuya was charged with second-degree murder and aiding an accomplice after the fact.
