On a summer night in 2014, a life was cut tragically short in North Minneapolis. Jaylin D’vonte Davis, a 19-year-old Black male from Brooklyn Center, was fatally shot in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 21st. The incident unfolded at a house party on the 4900 block of Camden Avenue North, where a heated confrontation between two groups of attendees escalated into violence.
Minneapolis Police responded to reports of multiple gunshots around 1 a.m. and discovered Davis in the front yard of the residence with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to North Memorial Medical Center, but tragically, his injuries proved fatal, and he died later that day. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and ruled the manner of death a homicide.
In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators began to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter. Witnesses at the party reported that a dispute had broken out, which then spilled into the front yard of the house. During the altercation, it was alleged that Davis was also armed and had fired at least one shot.
The investigation led police to identify a suspect in the case. Trevante Marquez Williams, a 21-year-old man from Brooklyn Center, was charged in connection with the fatal shooting. A witness identified Williams as having become upset after being asked to leave the party. According to the witness, Williams was seen waving a handgun in a threatening manner just before the shots were fired. In early September 2014, authorities issued a warrant for Williams's arrest, and he was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree riot, and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
