In a quiet home on a late November evening in north Minneapolis, a dispute between two acquaintances escalated into a fatal encounter. On November 28, 2015, Robert Montrele Mathis, a 29-year-old male, was shot and killed. The Hennepin County medical examiner's office later confirmed that Mathis died from a gunshot wound to the head. The incident occurred at a residence on the 3300 block of Logan Avenue N.

Witnesses reported that Mathis and another man, Everett Williams Jr., 26, had been arguing before the shooting. According to the criminal complaint, Mathis was attempting to leave Williams' house with a woman when the altercation turned violent. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Williams in the house, along with a shotgun in the kitchen and a discharged casing. A woman was present and trying to render aid to the wounded Mathis.
Everett Williams Jr. was subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with Robert Mathis's death. At the time of the shooting, Williams was on probation for a second-degree assault conviction from March 2013 in Hennepin County. Police confirmed that Williams and Mathis were known to each other.
