On January 13, 2017, Jamison Christopher Anderson, a 20-year-old resident of Vineland, Minnesota, was fatally shot by a Mille Lacs County Sheriff's deputy during an attempted home invasion robbery. The incident occurred on the Mille Lacs reservation, where four men broke into a home that had more than a dozen occupants. When deputies arrived at the scene, one of them, Daniel Mott, encountered an intruder in a bedroom holding a shotgun pointed at several people.
Despite commands to drop the weapon, the intruder refused, prompting Deputy Mott to shoot and kill him.
The Midwest Medical Examiner identified the deceased as Jamison Anderson. An autopsy was conducted, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension began an investigation into the incident. The BCA reported that there was no video footage of the shooting.
Three other suspects involved in the attempted robbery were arrested and booked into the Mille Lacs County Jail. These suspects were from Brainerd, Bayport, and Onamia, Minnesota. The investigation into the assaults and attempted robbery was conducted by the Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office and the Mille Lacs Tribal Police.
