Troy Trevante Byrd, a 23-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on the evening of April 9, 2020. The incident took place in the Ventura Village neighborhood, a community familiar to Byrd as it was where he had spent his formative years. He was sitting in a vehicle parked outside his childhood home on the 2200 block of 13th Avenue South when the tranquility of the evening was shattered
by gunfire.
According to police reports and accounts from those in the area, a gunman approached the car and opened fire, striking Byrd multiple times. In the immediate aftermath, he was rushed to the Hennepin County Medical Center by private individuals. Despite the efforts to save him, Troy Byrd succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, and his death was officially ruled a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred just before 9 p.m. near the intersection of East 22nd Street and 13th Avenue South.
Byrd was known in his community as a creative and generous soul who was passionate about music. He had set up a makeshift recording studio in the basement of his mother's home, where he had recently been living. He would open his studio to aspiring rappers in the neighborhood, offering them a place to hone their craft. He was remembered for his willingness to help others, assisting them with composing, mixing, and mastering their music, often free of charge. His death was a profound loss for a community that had seen him grow from a child playing in his backyard to a mentor for other young artists.
The Minneapolis Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. However, the case has been met with challenges.
