In the summer of 2015, a confrontation outside a North Minneapolis market tragically ended the life of 24-year-old Giovantae Walker, a male resident of the city. The incident, which unfolded outside the Northside Food Market located at 36th and Lyndale avenues N., stemmed from a previous robbery allegedly committed against Walker.
On that fateful day, Walker was inside the store when he encountered the man who had previously robbed him, accompanied by another individual named Brandon
Benjamin Broszko. Recognizing the man, Walker reportedly made a phone call to his family and friends. Surveillance footage from the market captured the moments that followed. As Broszko and the other man exited the store, Walker confronted the man who had allegedly robbed him, knocking him to the ground.
While this altercation was taking place, Broszko was seen on the video walking away down the sidewalk. He then retrieved a gun from his pants and fired in Walker's direction. After the shooting, Broszko was recorded picking up items he had dropped and fleeing the scene. Walker was seen running in the opposite direction before collapsing.
Investigators were able to identify Broszko through fingerprints left on a bottle and a sandwich that were recovered at the scene. In June 2016, Brandon Benjamin Broszko, then 31 years old, pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder in Hennepin County District Court for the fatal shooting of Walker. Following his plea, he was expected to be sentenced to 10 years in prison.
