On a cold January evening in Minneapolis, the life of a young Black/African American man, Bobby Glenn Hawkins, age 21, was tragically cut short. The first homicide of the new year in the city unfolded on the evening of January 3, 2025. Around 6:20 p.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the air in the 3200 block of Fremont Avenue North, triggering a ShotSpotter notification that dispatched Minneapolis police officers to the scene.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Hawkins with
life-threatening gunshot wounds. First responders immediately rendered aid to the young man before he was rushed to North Memorial Health Hospital in nearby Robbinsdale. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Hawkins succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital a few hours later, at approximately 9:24 p.m. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that his death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
A resident of Brooklyn Center, Hawkins became the city's first homicide victim of 2025. In the days following the shooting, authorities publicly identified him and appealed for information from the community. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara assured the family that investigators would work tirelessly to uncover the circumstances that led to the young man's death. However, no arrests have been made in connection with the fatal shooting, and police have not released any information regarding potential suspects. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek answers and urge anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward.
