In the winter of 2021, a Black/African American man's life was cut short in a Minneapolis home. David Marlon Anre Spicer, a 38-year-old male, was in a residence on the 400 block of 33rd Avenue North on the evening of Thursday, January 21st. It was around 10 p.m. when the sound of a single gunshot echoed through the house. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found Spicer inside, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the torso.
He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The initial investigation by the Minneapolis Police Department quickly led to a suspect being taken into custody at the residence. A firearm was also recovered from the home. Within days, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office announced charges in connection with the shooting. Prince Brown, 36, also of Minneapolis, was charged with second-degree unintentional murder. The shooting reportedly occurred on Brown's birthday.
According to the criminal complaint, Brown, Spicer, and others were gathered in the kitchen of the home. There was a gun present on a table, and Brown began to handle it in a reckless manner. He reportedly inserted a magazine into the firearm, removed it, and then inserted a different magazine. At that point, the gun discharged, and a single bullet struck Spicer in the torso, leading to his death. The investigation indicated that the shooting was not intentional, but rather the result of reckless behavior.
