On April 6, 2022, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Minneapolis police responded to reports of gunfire inside an apartment building located on the 2400 block of 17th Avenue South. Upon arrival, officers discovered 34-year-old Nate Banks, originally from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, deceased with multiple gunshot wounds. A woman in her early twenties was also found at the scene, suffering from life-threatening injuries; she was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Surveillance footage from within the apartment captured the events leading up to the shooting. The video showed Banks and the woman entering the apartment and engaging in a conversation with two men. During the interaction, one of the men, identified as 19-year-old Anthony Mayfield from Flint, Michigan, moved behind Banks and shot him multiple times, causing him to collapse. Mayfield then approached the woman, who attempted to flee, and shot her several times as she crouched in a corner. After the shootings, Mayfield and the other man were seen rifling through Banks' pockets before leaving the scene.
Following an investigation, authorities issued a warrant for Mayfield's arrest on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder. He was apprehended and, on March 28, 2023, pleaded guilty to both charges. As part of a plea agreement, Mayfield was sentenced to over 41 years in prison. The female victim survived her injuries but is expected to live with significant permanent impairments as a result of the attack.
