Nair Vives, 26, was a Black man from Queens, New York, when a late-morning ride on November 20, 2020 turned into a sudden, public killing near John F. Kennedy International Airport. He was inside a Nissan Maxima traveling along Rockaway Boulevard with three other passengers when gunfire tore through the front of the vehicle in broad daylight.
Investigators said the shots appeared to come from another vehicle that drew alongside the Maxima and opened fire, striking the two people seated
up front. Shell casings were found in the area, and the wounded driver managed only a short distance before losing control—crossing into oncoming lanes, crashing into a fence near the airport, and overturning as the vehicle came to rest off the roadway in marshy weeds. The two passengers in the back—a woman and a young child—were not hit by the gunfire but were hurt in the violent wreck that followed.
Both of the front-seat victims were rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead. Police later identified the second victim as Angel Caraballo and described the pair as stepbrothers. In the hours after the shooting, officials said they believed the ambush had the hallmarks of gang-related violence and noted that both victims had gang affiliations; investigators also said the driver had recently been released from prison on a gun possession case and was on parole.
As for who pulled the trigger, the public details end where the trail goes cold. Detectives said they were hunting for surveillance footage from nearby businesses and logistics facilities, trying to reconstruct the moments before the gunfire and the route the shooters used to escape. At the time of the initial reports, police said there had been no arrests, and no suspect names or descriptions were released publicly.
