She shared an apartment with her sister at the Windemere Apartments complex, creating a life for herself in the bustling city.
However, a shadow loomed over her in the form of a past relationship that would ultimately lead to her untimely demise.
For approximately two years, Lisa had been in a relationship with Gregory D. Lessley. As the holidays of 1998 approached, she made the decision to end their romance. This separation appeared to take a significant toll on Lessley. In the days leading up to the fatal incident, his behavior became increasingly desperate. He visited Lisa at her workplace with flowers, demanding to know if she was seeing someone new. Despite her reassurances that she was not, he remained unsettled. A phone call that evening solidified the end of their relationship, sending Lessley into a deeper state of depression.
On January 6, 1999, the morning after purchasing a handgun, Gregory Lessley went to Lisa's apartment complex. He confronted Lisa and shot her multiple times in the abdomen. An autopsy would later reveal five bullet wounds. Lessley was arrested and charged with premeditated first-degree murder. During the legal proceedings, he admitted to shooting Lisa but claimed his original intention was to take his own life. In 2001, a jury found Gregory D. Lessley guilty, and he was sentenced to a "hard 40" sentence, ensuring he would serve a minimum of 40 years in prison for the murder of Lisa Ann Sears.
