In the summer of 2023, the life of Vanessa Calgren Crawford, a 50-year-old White/Caucasian woman, was tragically cut short in her Wichita, Kansas, home. On the morning of July 25th, a mother arriving to drop off her child at Vanessa's in-home daycare discovered a horrifying scene. Vanessa and a companion, 58-year-old Donald Eckert, were found deceased inside the residence, both having suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
Vanessa was discovered with a gunshot wound to her upper right chest, while Donald had been shot in the head.
The investigation quickly focused on a primary suspect: Vanessa's estranged husband, Charles "Chuck" Crawford, who was 63 at the time. Authorities located him just a couple of blocks from the crime scene, armed and reportedly making suicidal threats. In the face of overwhelming evidence, Charles Crawford pleaded no contest to two counts of first-degree felony murder in December 2024. He later received two consecutive life sentences, a measure of justice for the grieving families and community. The sentencing ensures that he will not be eligible for parole until 2073.
