In the early morning hours of February 6, 2018, a senseless act of violence tragically cut short the life of 18-year-old Myranda Keck, a white female from Wichita, Kansas. Just three days shy of her nineteenth birthday, Keck was fatally wounded in what police have described as a drive-by shooting. The incident occurred around 2:20 a.m. in the 1600 block of South Estelle, a moment that would forever alter the lives of her loved ones.
At the time of the shooting, Keck was a passenger in a
car with her mother and boyfriend. They had just parked at a residence when another vehicle approached and an unknown assailant, or assailants, fired multiple shots into their car. While Keck's mother and boyfriend were unharmed, a single gunshot struck and killed the young woman. The Wichita Police Department's cold case unit later reported that Keck was asleep in the backseat when one of two rounds fired at the car went through the back door and struck her in the head.
The investigation into Myranda Keck's death began immediately, but the case has since grown cold. Law enforcement officials have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the homicide. Her case is now listed among the unsolved homicides being handled by the Wichita Police Department's Cold Case Unit. This special division is dedicated to pursuing justice for victims of unresolved crimes, continually seeking new leads and information that might bring closure to grieving families.
In the wake of her death, Myranda's family remembered her as a loving and generous person. Her stepmother described her as an "average teenage girl" who adored her younger brothers and "would do anything for anybody, just to make somebody feel better." To honor her memory and her love for children, her family organized a balloon release and encouraged donations to a local domestic violence shelter, specifically to benefit the children residing there. The community continues to hope that someone will come forward with information that will lead to an arrest and finally bring justice for Myranda.
