On the evening of December 29, 2020, in a residential area just outside of Wichita, Kansas, the life of 22-year-old Kayla Gwen Schmidt, a Caucasian female, was tragically cut short. Responding to a shooting at a home in the 3900 block of West Fairhaven around 8:15 p.m., authorities discovered a grim scene. Inside the residence, 43-year-old Bradley Michael Reece was found deceased. Schmidt was critically injured and rushed to a local hospital.
Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2020.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly identified three individuals as persons of interest. In the days that followed, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office sought public assistance in locating Joshua Dean Halstead, 34, and Jacquellyn Michelle Arthur, 28. By January 6, 2021, both Halstead and Arthur were located and arrested. A third suspect, Michael Clayton Wilking, 32, was also taken into custody. All three Wichita residents were subsequently charged with first-degree murder, aggravated burglary, and aggravated robbery in connection with the deaths of Schmidt and Reece.
As the case unfolded, it was revealed that the violent encounter stemmed from a dispute over a drug debt. Wilking, identified as Schmidt's boyfriend, and his accomplices had gone to Reece's home with the intent to confront him. An affidavit stated the group planned to "teach him a lesson" for not paying a drug debt, a plan that escalated into a robbery. During an exchange of gunfire, Reece was killed at the scene, and Schmidt was fatally wounded. Following the shooting, her companions left her at the hospital where she later died. Michael Wilking eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 34 years in prison for his role in the deaths.
