On a cold December day in Wichita, Kansas, the life of 15-year-old Hispanic male, Marcus Chavez, came to a tragic end. On December 15, 2012, his mother, Sandra Torres, was returning home with Christmas presents when she discovered him lifeless in his room. The cause of death was a gunshot wound.
The event was a devastating blow to his family and the community, leaving them in deep mourning.
In the aftermath of the tragic event, authorities determined that Marcus's death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Consequently, there were no suspects or arrests made in connection with his death.
The profound loss was compounded for the family years later when Marcus's brother, Javi Poloface Chavez, was also lost to gun violence in 2018. This further tragedy spurred his mother to advocate against gun violence. Marcus's funeral service was held at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church, and his obituary was published in the Wichita Eagle. He was remembered by friends as a funny soul who always made people smile.
