In the summer of 2019, the Wichita, Kansas community was shaken by the violent death of a well-regarded local business owner. Charles "Chuck" Giles, a 55-year-old Caucasian male, was a familiar and friendly face to many as the proprietor of Neighbor's Bar and Grill, a place often likened to a local "Cheers" where everyone knew each other. His life was brought to an abrupt and tragic end on the night of Friday, July 19, 2019, in what police believe was a targeted attack.
After closing his
restaurant for the night, Giles followed his routine and drove to his home in the Benjamin Hills neighborhood. It was a ritual that, investigators believe, his killer or killers were aware of. As he pulled into his driveway on West Columbine, an assailant, who is thought to have been lying in wait, ambushed him. Giles was shot multiple times in his driveway. His longtime girlfriend, who was inside the house, heard a commotion. When she went to check, she made the devastating discovery of Giles lying wounded. Knowing he often carried a significant amount of cash from the restaurant, she checked his pocket and found it empty, immediately realizing he had been the victim of a robbery.
The Wichita Police Department launched a homicide investigation, quickly determining that the motive was robbery and that Giles had likely been targeted for the cash he was known to carry after work. Investigators believe one or more individuals were involved in the crime. Security footage from a nearby home captured a person being dropped off near Giles's house before the shooting and a car speeding away afterward. It is believed this individual hid and waited for Giles to arrive home. Despite having eyewitness accounts that corroborated some of the events of that evening, investigators were unable to identify the suspect or suspects involved.
In the years following the murder, the case has grown cold, and no arrests have been made. Detectives have publicly stated their belief that the person responsible would have likely shown a sudden need for money around the time of the killing or come into a significant sum of money shortly after. With a lack of new leads, the case remains an open and unsolved homicide. The tragic death of Chuck Giles left his family, including a daughter and two granddaughters, and the community that frequented his establishment mourning the loss of a beloved figure.
