A young Hispanic/Latino man, Jacob Edward Ruis, was 23 years old when his life was cut short in Overland Park, Kansas. The male victim was inside an apartment on Reeder Street late on Friday, November 20, 2015, when he sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
According to the Overland Park Police Department, the person who shot Ruis was an acquaintance. Despite this, investigators did not suspect foul play, and the incident was treated as an accidental shooting.
Detectives continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event, but the initial belief was that it was a tragic accident. Consequently, there were no reports of any arrests being made or any suspects being sought in connection with his death. The brother of Jacob Ruis later asked the public not to blame the friends who were with him at the time of the fatal incident.
In the wake of his death, arrangements were made for those who knew him to pay their respects. A visitation was held on December 4, 2015, at Abundant Harvest Church in Kansas City, Kansas, with a service following the next day. Jacob Ruis was buried at Maple Hill Cemetery.
