On a summer day in Overland Park, Kansas, the life of Todd Eugene Davis, a 48-year-old White man, was tragically cut short. On July 3, 2018, Davis was at his job as a contractor, working on installing turf at the Sunrise Point Elementary School playground. An argument broke out among him and his co-workers, leading to a fatal shooting.
Todd Eugene Davis was a devoted father to his three children: Tanner, Taylor, and Tucker.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 6, 1970, he was known by his family as a man who cherished fatherhood and attended all of his children's activities, from baseball and lacrosse games to school functions. He was immensely proud of his children, and they were the center of his world. A graduate of Ruskin High School, he also had a passion for riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and particularly enjoyed the Fourth of July holiday.
The man accused of the shooting was 32-year-old Anthony David Grable of Kansas City, Missouri. Following the altercation at the school, Grable allegedly shot Davis and another coworker, Efren Joaquin Gomez. Davis succumbed to his injuries, while Gomez was left in critical condition. In the chaotic aftermath, Grable fled the scene. He attempted to hijack two vehicles and was successful in taking a GMC Denali. He then drove the stolen SUV to the owner's home, where a standoff with law enforcement ensued. Grable eventually surrendered to the officers surrounding the residence.
Anthony David Grable was subsequently charged with a litany of crimes, including one count of premeditated murder for the death of Todd Davis, one count of attempted premeditated murder for the shooting of Efren Gomez, three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated robbery, and one count of burglary. He was held on a $1 million bond. The shooting occurred at a time when there were no students present at the elementary school, and no staff members were involved in the incident. In the wake of his father's death, Tanner Davis spoke of the family's profound loss, remembering his father as an amazing and dedicated family man who took on his contracting job to provide for his children.
